Swedish Word of the Week | Potatis

This week we will learn the word potatis. It’s a hard one…I bet you can’t guess what it means! ;P

Potatis=potato

Potatoes are consumed by Swedes daily. They eat them boiled, skinned, and cut into large pieces, “riced”, mashed, baked, baked in cream, etc. There’s no limit to how they eat their potatoes.

Potatoes originally come from South America and made their way to Sweden. It is a hardy vegetable that is easy to grow…even in a tough climate like Sweden. The potato nourished the Swedes through tough economic times. Potatoes are now the cornerstone to almost every Swedish meal.

They are so celebrated that just recently the first crop of new potatoes were auctioned off for 2,000SEK per kilo! According to Svenskpotatis.se the potatoes were auctioned off and the winner paid a total of 80,000 kronor for the first potatoes. Proceeds went to Team Rynkeby Good Morning – Childhood Cancer Fund. How incredible is that?!

As I said earlier, potatoes are an easy and hardy vegetable to grow. Try it yourself! There is a book that walks you through growing your own potatoes.
